The Amao Quartet is an experimental electric guitar quartet from Porto Alegre, Brazil. The group was founded by Glauber Kiss de Souza in mid-2014. Since then, the Amao Quartet toured in 2016 as part of the (des)Virtua Tour, created a new concert series, and released their project, Improcreations.
Starting off with O.U.a.T.i.Po.A., the song sets the tone for the album. Beginning with the ambient noises of tension on guitar strings and several plucks dispersed throughout, the quartet weaves a pensive mood. The dreamy song then takes a turn into what can only be described as grungy noise with over-driven guitar. If you can imagine Nirvana as an ambient noise band, then you can get the gist of the sound the Amao Quartet creates on their intro track.
Our favorite track from the project is TrVdlcl0nVI. Crazy bass lines, reminiscent of Les Claypool, frantic guitar, and various sounds create an interesting blend of elements. Moreover, we think this is the Amao Quartet at their best: chaotic, yet organized. Interestingly enough, the quartet hides their improvisation very well. As a matter of fact, it was hard to tell when the quartet was not planning a few steps ahead.
Improcreations is by no means an entry into the noise genre; it goes full-throttle and does what the band does best. It is refreshing to see artists that are not held back by inhibition. However, having said this, I don’t think the project will convert any non-noise listeners to pick up the genre. On the other hand, for fans of noise and ambient rock, I would definitely recommend Improcreations.
